Group Takes Poverty Challenge
By DANIEL PEARCE, SIMCOE REFORMER
Imagine what it would be like to live off $585 a month, the basic welfare stipend for a single person in Ontario. How would you feed yourself once you've paid rent?In Simcoe, your ent i re monthly income would be gone right away just to keep a roof over your head. You have to eat to live so something has to give.In an effort to bring attention to what it's like to live in poverty, some of the most prominent people in Haldimand and Norfolk counties have agreed to eat from poverty food baskets for five consecutive days, Nov. 1 to 5.The catch is there's really only enough food on the list they're given to last three days. The 13 participants (who include two OPP detachment inspectors) will blog their experiences -- they've been told there's no cheating, just eat what's in the basket -- and the public is encouraged to read their entries.Hunger issues are found not only with single mothers but also the elderly, single men, and the working poor, said Coraine Wray, a public health dietician with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, which has organized the "Do the Math" challenge. To Read More, Click Here!
